漱石は明治の文明開化期に育った。近代化を目前にして彼が最も悩んだのは、変転きわまりない時代をどのように生き抜くかということであった。東洋文化と西洋文化という異質なものとのふれ合いで生ずる相剋と矛盾に文字通り悪戦苦闘「則天去私」という言葉もこの相剋と矛盾から生まれたといってよい。本書は第1、2部において彼の小説と英文学との係わりを、第3部では「則天去私」と英文学を取り上げ、定評のある英文で斬新な漱石像に迫った力作。
