表題原書（1995）より全6章を抜粋、15回のリーディングパートに分けて英語読解用テキストに編纂。「地球に生命が誕生してから、五つの大量絶滅の歴史を経て現代に至っている今日において、人間（活動）が種内・種間の多様性、及び生態系の多様性を滅ぼす要因となっていることを示唆する」思索的で、かつサイエンスの根拠に基づいて展開されている論を備えた文章の精読が、教育現場では不可欠と編者は力説、読解・思考・表現を連鎖させながらの語学力向上を目指す。

本書の構成

全15ユニット、本文の冒頭にそのユニットで扱う内容のアウトラインが日本語によって示されている。設問は3問（ユニットによって設問内容に変化を持たせている）、章末にはTechnical phrases and expressionsを配し、表現力のさらなる向上を目指す。側注、詳注付。さらにユニットの後半にRapid Readingを取り入れ、授業内容の充実を計る。
